Metaverse 🌌is the talk of the town with it's immense potential to change the way we experience in the digital world.
Coming in the next few editions will be the different aspects of Metaverse with this edition’s focus on ‘Augmented Reality’ (AR).
Augmented Reality (AR)-A type of technology that allows digital images and information to be displayed onto the physical environment , is an enhanced version of the real physical world that is achieved through the use of digital visual elements, sound, or other sensory stimuli and delivered via technology. It is a growing trend among companies involved in mobile computing and business applications in particular.
AR involves overlaying visual, auditory, or other sensory information onto the real world to enhance one’s experience. Retailers and other companies can use augmented reality to promote products or services, launch novel marketing campaigns, and collect unique user data. Unlike virtual reality, which creates its own cyber environment, augmented reality adds to the existing world as it is.
Examples of augmented reality :"
Some early adopters in the retail sector have developed AR technologies designed to enhance the consumer shopping experience. Augmented reality has been incorporated into store catalog apps, which allows consumers to visualize what different products would look like in different environments. For example, when buying furniture, shoppers point the camera to the appropriate room and the product will appear in the foreground.
Augmented reality’s benefits can also extend to the healthcare sector, where it can play a much bigger role. AR apps enable users to see highly detailed, 3D images of different body systems when they hover their mobile device over a target image. This use of AR has become a powerful learning tool for training medical professionals.
What Is Augmented Reality Used for?
Augmented reality either makes visual changes to a natural environment or enhances that environment through adding new information. It can be used for a variety of purposes, including gaming, product visualization, marketing campaigns, architecture and home design, education, and industrial manufacturing, among others.
What Are the Advantages of Augmented Reality?
Augmented reality is an interactive experience in which a real world environment is enhanced with computer-generated visual elements, sounds, and other stimuli. It can provide a user with a heightened, more immersive experience than they would experience otherwise that adds to the user's enjoyment or understanding. From a commercial perspective, augmented reality can increase brand awareness and boost sales.
Is Augmented Reality or Virtual Reality More Realistic?
Since augmented reality uses a real world environment in conjunction with computer generated visual elements, it may be seen as more realistic than virtual reality, which is 100% computer-generated. However, advances in technology mean that even entirely virtual environments can seem fully realistic.
Looking back to 2022, augmented reality (AR) has been playing a pivotal role to drive industries towards immersive experiences. Practically all the trends were spot-on, and it's only expected to get even higher in 2023.
It can be reflected through the global marketplace worth of AR. In 2023, the market leaps—with the worth around $60 billion. That only means that AR penetrates through all sectors, and it's getting used by much wider audience. Isn't that a great news for us?
And just like every year, AR will also have trends that will be a spotlight each year. We're not only talking about AR glasses or headsets, but literally all aspects of AR that have been predicted to be trends in 2023.
Rendezvous
Hearing from the people that has crossed the same path as ours could give us the motivation to strive harder for our dreams. 🕊️
In this edition of Tidings, meet Vishal, Computer Science graduate, 2016-20 batch.
1. Could you give us a brief description about yourself?
I am Vishal, alumni of GCE Kannur. Currently I am a UX experience designer basically I'm a freelancer. Before that I worked in TCS for 1½ years and I did my graduation in computer science engineering and I'm 2020 pass out.
2.How did you land up in IEEE and what was your position ?
When I was in my second year there was an induction program into IEEE, they did the induction program in a very nice manner and I got really interested and I became very curious about IEEE so I joined. After nearly 6-7 months I became the technical coordinator of the IEEE SB GCEK and the next year I started IAS society in our college. Actually I was in IEEE Execom for 2 years.
3.What were the challenges you faced while in IEEE?
There were many challenges I faced when I was in IEEE, like a major issue in the IEEE was we didn't have huge amount of funds and resources. So it was very difficult to conduct high quality workshops because funds were very low and conducting events like Invictus were very difficult for us and also we were forced to keep the candidate entry fee high. It was very tough to attract candidates to our programs These are the few of the difficulties I faced while I was in IEEE.
4.One memorable experience while in college
One of the best moments in the college was to conduct Invictus. It was really very fun. I was able to meet a lot of seniors, bond with them and because of Invictus I was able to maintain a bond with them till now. Even now I am contacting them like buddies. Because of IEEE I developed my connections with my seniors.
5.How has BTech particularly IEEE transformed you as a person?
IEEE basically taught me how to conduct events, it's something which helped me realize that I am someone who can manage many sets of events. So this is the thing that IEEE taught me how to do all these things. So I am pretty thankful to IEEE for making me realize my potential to an extent that I can do anything.
6. What's your message to your juniors and IEEE members?
My advice to all my juniors is to concentrate more on improving your technical skills, I had noticed that even though it's a technical society as such I don't think that the volunteers and Execoms is getting much benefits on the technical side. We conduct events but the thing is IEEE core members, I don't think they are very technically sound so even upskill yourself also. Even though I was an Execom member for two years, I don't think I had upskilled my technical skill as such because of IEEE. Contribution of IEEE towards my technical skill was less and all the Execom members will feel the same too. So I am saying that Execom members should also join these technical events being conducted so they can upgrade themself because at the end of btech life as a tech graduate you need to have technical skills, otherwise there is no meaning that you are a tech graduate with zero technical skills.
